Amazon Go– RFID Grocery Store With No Checkout

Amazon just officially announced grocery store With No Checkout. It’s called Amazon Go, and the first store in Seattle is set to open to the public in early 2017. Right now only Amazon employee or beta tester can get in the Grocery Store.

The concept of this Grocery Store With No Checkout is that there’s no place to checkout. What you need to do is tap your phone on some kind of detector when walking in and then walking out with your food. As soon as you’ve left, your billed is paid through your Amazon account. It appears that the store seems to primarily focus on prepared food by in-house chefs, and that there might be an RFID chip on the packaging that talks to your phone.

Amazon Go checkout-free shopping experience is made possible by the same types of technologies used in self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning according to an Amazon press release. It would need computer vision to see what people are looking at and what they’re picking up, sensors on shelves, a mobile app to tie an individual user to their identity (going through a turnstile and scanning a QR code before entering the store is likely key in this), and perhaps some kind of souped-up RFID to verify individual items.
